Choosing a suitable high school can be a daunting task for both prospective students and their parents. It is important to gauge specific projects and programs, the student’s incipient career or scholastic interests, proximity and transportation arrangements and the quality of the school’s community and academic record among other criteria when making a decision. The following is a brief and simple summary of programs offered by the high schools in Montreal’s West Island community.
Lester B. Pearson School Board
The Lester B. Pearson School Board (LBPSB) governs all English public high schools in and around Montreal’s West Island. Predominantly consisting of detached housing, the West Island was traditionally an anglophone suburban community comprising the western third of the Island of Montreal, but it has been diversifying due to urban sprawl, an influx of francophones and new ethnic arrivals, most of which are required to attend French language high schools under Bill 101.
An advantage to West Island students cleared for English education is the borderless approach the LBPSB has toward neighborhood zones. While primary school attendance falls under a zoning policy that gives most students a choice between Bilingual and Early Immersion programs, “secondary school students have the choice of enrolling in any secondary school in the system” (LBPSB).
