Guaranteed Investment Certificates are often referred to as GICs. They are offered by most financial institutions and insurance companies.
What is a GIC?
Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs) are fixed income investments that guarantee the investor both the interest rate as well as the initial capital investment. They are bought for a fixed term such as 1, 3, or 5 years. As an example you can purchase a $5000 GIC on January 1, 2010 for 3 years at 2%. This means that on January 1 2013 you are guaranteed to have your $5000 capital investment plus $100 per year of interest for a total of approximately $5300.
