Investools Investor Tool Box

The box top trade is one that allows investors to buy or sell shares at a particular market price, and if all shares cannot be traded at that price or better, a limit order to buy or sell is enacted to trade them the next time the value hits the first market price or better.

What is a Box Top Order in Stock Trading

A box top order buys or sells as many shares as possible at market price, and then trades the rest, if possible, at that same price or better by placing a limit order. For instance, suppose that a stock is trading at $5 per share, and an investor is looking to buy 1000 shares. He could set a box top order, which would immediately buy as many shares as possible at the $5 market price, and if not enough sellers are available or the price jumps quickly, a limit order is set to purchase the remaining shares at $5 or less. If the price drops outright, shares will be bought, as the order only prevents overspending or underselling.
