Police Investigate Adelaide Shooting

For reasons unknown, taxi driver Derrick Bird, a 52-year-old self-employed divorced father of two went on a shooting rampage June 2, 2010. The attacks left 12 people dead and at least 25 injured Sky News reports. Police say they have now found the body of Bird near the Lake District town of Boot, Eskdale.

Bird Shoots Two Colleagues

Although confirmed details are sketchy surrounding the shootings that have occurred in Cumbria, Derrick Bird was believed to have started his rampage in Whitehaven, shooting two co-workers and wounding a third. Bird then proceeded south randomly shooting victims along the way. Bird, armed with what was described by one witness as "quite a big shotgun," traveled through Egremont; Gosforth and Seascale before arriving in Boot.

Police have confirmed that they did in fact find a body which they believe is that of Derrick Boot who appears to have turned the gun upon himself, ending his life. What triggered the attacks is unclear at this point; shooting rampages are rare in the U.K. because gun culture and guns in general are not a part of everyday life.

Twelve People Shot Dead

All twelve victims names have yet to be released but one victim is believed to be a 60-year old woman. Another victim has been named as Gary Purdham. Police said that as of now, there are 30 different crime scenes, creating the deadliest mass shooting in Britain since 1966.

Glenda Pears, manager of the taxi company where Bird worked told Sky News that Bird had been a cab driver for 23 years and that the co-workers Bird allegedly shot were friends. The incident has left the people of Cumbria in shock, Britain rarely experiences such tragic events.

British police were quick to respond to the attack, handing out flyers and announcing Bird's details to an alert public. Twitter users began posting sightings of Bird's cab along with his license plate number and make of vehicle. Police soon tracked Bird to Boot in Eskdale about three-and a half hours after the shooting began; they discovered his body and recovered a rifle and a shotgun. Police have since confirmed that Bird was a licensed gun holder.
